Contrary to what many people might be thinking, the Humane Society of the United States does not only keep animals for people to come and adopt. While part of the work conducted by the organization is to help the local organizations in their work, HSUS’s work is usually more than that. To bring out the complex work the organization carries out using simple words, the organization’s motto is ‘Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty’.
There are thousands of animal species in the world. Part of the work that HSUS gets involved in is to protect, save, and rescue these animals. The organization works globally not just in the United States and has been involved in work to save animals found deep in the Ocean. Some of the animals the organization has participated in rescuing have been involved in racing, rodeos, Zoos, circuses, hunting, fashion, aquariums and research. The list is however long.
The HSUS also works with animals which have been domesticated in homes and also provides support to the local shelters and animal control professionals. HSUS has been a leading organization in lobbying for laws related to animals both locally and internally. These laws are meant to curb animal cruelty. When disasters such as the Katrina have occurred, animals are always affected. When such incidences happen, the HSUS is always ready to send a team which will be involved in the rescue of animals. HSU also has a program of educating backyard owners of how to coexist with backyard animals such as the squirrels, mice, and raccoons.
The history of animal welfare organizations has a long history and started way before HSUS was founded. The first organization to be founded was the society for the prevention of cruelty of animals and was founded in 1886. This was the first organization to advocate for animal rights. More other organizations came up. In 1887, delegates from these organizations agreed to collapse and form the American Humane Association. The disagreements among some members led to some of the leaving and forming HSUS.
HSUS works to ensure that all cruelty against animals has been eliminated in the whole world. The first legislation which it pushed was the removal of the law that required shelters to turn over animals to be used in research work. The organization has led to passing of many laws that protect animals. The wide variety of legislation range from those that protect species which are endangered to those that condemn inhuman treatment of animals.
